Mini Cooper Countryman only small car to earn good grade in latest IIHS crash tests [w/video]

Competitors in the small-car segment didn’t do nearly as well. Four vehicles earned “poor” grades.

Only one small car out of 12 tested earned a good grade in the latest round of crash-test results compiled by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Mini Cooper Countryman received a “good” ranking on the organization’s small-front overlap test.

Its competitors in the small-car segment didn’t do nearly as well. Four vehicles earned “poor” grades, including the all-electric Nissan Leaf and Juke, the Mazda5 and the Fiat 500L, and two more earned marginal scores.

Introduced two years ago, the small front overlap test has been a difficult one for automakers to master, particularly so for small cars, which have less weight to absorb the forces of a car accident. So far, IIHS has tested 32 vehicles in the small-car segment and 13 have earned marginal or poor scores. On the flip side, 19 earned good or acceptable scores.

“Consumers trading the inherent safety of a larger vehicle for the convenience or fuel economy of a small car should focus their search on these vehicles with state-of-the-art safety designs,” said Joe Nolan, senior vice president for vehicle research at IIHS.

Stock Miata beats bunch of high-powered cars in wet 1/4-mile drag race

When is a stock, 167-horsepower Mazda MX-5 Miata quicker than a Chevrolet Corvette, Ford Mustang, Lamborghini Gallardo, Lotus Elise and a Porsche 911? When it’s raining. Sort of.

Mazda Canada arranged a unique drag race to show off the fact that the Miata’s optional power retractable folding hardtop can go from top-down to top-up in just 12 seconds flat. In this video, all six cars line up for a drag race, and it starts to rain (well, sort of – but you’ll have to watch the video all the way to the end to see what we mean). The green flag is waved, and the timer starts as soon as the convertibles begin to put their tops up. But because the Miata’s roof mechanism gets the car’s roof back up a full 5.1 seconds quicker than the second-place car, the Mazda gets a serious advantage off the line for the actual drag race.

It’s a fun video. And while we’ve spoiled the results (come on, the video was uploaded by Mazda, you knew the Miata was going to win), be sure to see how it all unfolds, below.

Scion FR-S pitted against oldtimers RX-8 and S2000

Scion FR-S vs Mazda RX-8 vs Honda S2000

There are very few vehicles available today that compare directly with the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ twins. A case could be made for the Mazda MX-5 Miata, and possibly even six-cylinder versions of American coupes like the Ford Mustang. Pretty much everything else is either too expensive or is powered by the wrong set of wheels.

The boys from EverydayDriver on YouTube decided the only fair way to judge the inherent qualities of the Toyobaru twins was to pit them against two standard-bearers of years past: The Honda S2000 and Mazda RX-8. Neither of these cars is an exact matchup, with the Honda boasting a convertible top and the RX-8 offering more practicality via a rear seat and two reverse-opening doors for easier access. What they do offer, however, are similar performance stats and proven reputations for excellent handling.

None of this talk answers the real question, though: Which one wins the comparison test? Scroll down to watch the video, and be prepared for something of a surprise conclusion.

This is how you set your V8 Miata on fire in your garage

V8 Miata on fire video

We were never all that great at math, but we can tell you that Miata + V8 = awesome. That even applies to heavy cast-iron small block Chevrolet V8s with carburetors instead of fuel injection. But as one aspiring wrench recently found out, even the most sound of formulas can lead to disaster when you start throwing in unknown variables. Variables like a leaky fuel system. The gentleman in the video below seems keen on firing up his partially installed Chevrolet engine using a jug of fuel and a remote starter, but disaster strikes when things suddenly go all flamb

2014 Mazda6 with cellists on a salt flat

Mazda has the very elegant notion that you’ll want to be with the 2014 Mazda6 all day and all of the night: a two-minute piece highlighting the Kodo design and Skyactiv technologies underneath the new sedan puts the Mazda6 on a salt plain with two cellists riffing the hit by The Kinks.

There’s rolling footage to show you how “the wild and dynamic expressions of motion artistically realize a powerful presence” in that seriously Soul Red body. We should get more info on what other expression it intends to bring our way when we see it at the Paris Motor Show. For now, you can enjoy it and the original version of “All Day and All of the Night” in the videos below.

Flyin’ Miata gets the documentary treatment

Flyin Miata at Targa Newfoundland

It’s been nearly a year since Flyin’ Miata took two cars to the Targa Newfoundland. As you may recall, I got to tag along and do my best to get the supercharged Grand Touring entry as lost as possible. While we were there, one very dedicated film crew followed us from stage to stage, thereby documenting our various triumphs and defeats for a feature-length film. Packed with lots of in-stage footage, interviews with crew as well as fans of both Flyin’ Miata and the Targa Newfoundland, the show finds itself on footing with the likes of Truth in 24 and From Dust to Glory.

I spend a bit of time on screen trying to explain what it’s like to drown under a league of time-speed-distance calculations, but don’t let that be a deterrent. The movie does a stellar job of conveying exactly what it’s like to compete in one of the most unique motorsports endeavors on the planet. You can check out the preview for Racing the Rock below or head over to Flyin’ Miata to purchase your DVD copy. Keep an eye out for it to show up on iTunes and BluRay later down the line.

Next Mazda6 teaser #3 - taillight screencap

Mazda is only giving us tapas-sized video bites of its upcoming Mazda6, but at least each bite comes quickly. Just days after the second teaser came out, our third view of the sedan reveals some unexpected inspiration from the Takeri concept: its paint. The Takeri show car was a deep, lustrous red; the Mazda6 in the videos is called Soul Red, said by Mazda to use “an innovative new paint process… to capture both the deepness and vividness of the colour, highlighting the cars sleek design.”

Its color and its shape are still looking good. Have a look for yourself in the 27 seconds of teasing in the video below.

2013 Mazda6 teaser video #1 - headlight and grille

Don’t blink, or you might just miss the first teaser for the next-generation Mazda6. Mazda has released a 21-second spot designed to give the world a glimpse of the company’s new sedan. From the look of things, the Mazda6 will borrow heavily from the Takeri Concept Car we saw debut at the Tokyo Motor Show last year. While details remain scarce about the upcoming model, rumor has it the four-door may bow with nothing but four-cylinder engines under the hood. Automakers like Chevrolet, Hyundai and Kia have already embraced that move for their family sedans, resulting in lighter, more efficient platforms.

Whether or not Mazda does eschew a traditional V6 engine engine for a four-pot, odds are buyers will find a Skyactiv mill behind the headlights. That means direct injection will make a showing on the car for the first time in the model’s history. Currently, the most powerful Skyactiv four-cylinder in the Mazda stable tops out at 155 horsepower, which would be low for an entry-level model in this segment. We expect a more powerful tune of the 2.0-liter Skyactiv engine in the Mazda3 to be the base powerplant, but we imagine the technology will need to be mated with either a larger-displacement block or forced induction if Mazda intends to stay competitive with other automakers’ higher-power engine options. Check out the teaser video below.

Watch a Mazda tackle the Wall of Death, live to tell the tale

mazda2 stunt

We love crazy promotional videos with hair-raising stunts that seem to defy gravity, and this particular spot certainly checks all those boxes. Mazda has teamed up with The Demon Drome crew to determine if its Mazda2 can successfully whirl around a motor drome.

The motor drome is essentially a cylinder about 30 feet in diameter with wooden planks that are positioned at an impossible angle. Trained men and women have traditionally used motorcycles in these stunts, but the Japanese automaker evidently thought its tiny Mazda2 would be an ideal four-wheeled replacement.

We knew the Mazda2 was nimble, but this is pretty sweet. Hit the jump to watch the video for yourself… and try not to be alarmed by the demonic-sounding backwards talk.

Forza 4 records Mazda 787B race car

In the Forza Motorsport 4 vs. Gran Turismo 5 debate, no one questions Forza’s commitment to genuine engine noise. Normally, the Turn 10 sound engineers use Dyno Authority in a business and residential area of Seattle to record their cars’ sounds, but when it came to the 1991 Mazda 787B that was unleashed in February’s ALMS DLC, the Le Mans-winning racer was just too loud.

In fact, the 700-horsepower 2.7-liter Wankel-engined legend with four rotors and its continuously variable intake was the loudest car that Forza engineers have ever caught on mic. Look below to watch a video on how they did it.
