Mazda MX-5 vs. Porsche Boxster

Earlier this month, our friends across the pond at Auto Express released the first in a two-video series that would see them try and build up a second-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata that could best a standard Porsche Boxster around the track. While that first video detailed the mods to the MX-5 – a supercharger, some suspension upgrades and a new set of super-sticky rubber being chief among them – and set baseline lap times for the stock car, today, we have the results of the 5,000-pound ($8,200) upgrade job.

Of course, we aren’t going to spoil those for you. You’ll need to watch the full video, which recaps the upgrades before digging into a comparison of both straight-line-speed differences between the 2.7-liter Porsche Boxster and blown Miata, as well as their behavior and lap times on the track.

Take a look and let us know what you think in Comments.

Car and Driver releases 2014 10Best list, Miata’s 8-year run ends [w/video]

2014 Car and Driver 10Best

Change! Unlike last year, in which Car and Driver’s 10Best list was populated with almost exactly the same vehicles as the year before – the only change between 2012 and 2013 was that the Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ twins took the position previously occupied by the Cadillac CTS-V. By contrast, 2014 brings with it several notable additions and subtractions. But first, let’s look at what carries over from 2013 to ’14: the Audi A6/A7/S6/S7 family, the BMW 3 Series/4 Series family, the Honda Accord, Porsche Boxster/Cayman and Volkswagen Golf/GTI.

That’s a mighty fine list of machinery there, to be sure. But you may notice a few glaring omissions, most notably, in our eyes at least, the Mazda MX-5 Miata. For those keeping track, the little Japanese sports car had been on the list for eight consecutive years, ending in 2013, for a total of 14 appearances since hitting the market in 1989. Given the model’s age and the rest of this new 10 Best list, we don’t think Mazda will be too disappointed, however. Also missing is the Ford Focus/Focus ST and Mustang, which made it in 2013 in GT and Boss 302 guises. Finally, the Honda Fit falls off, along with the aforementioned FR-S and BRZ coupes.

So, fully half of last year’s 10Best cars were removed for 2014. Here are the new faces:

Want to know the reasoning behind what’s leftover and what’s brand new? Head on over to Car and Driver for the complete rundown, scroll down below for a video, and feel free to let us know what you think of the magazine’s 10Best Cars for 2014 in the Comments.

Car and Driver reveals its 2012 10Best cars [w/video]

Each year, the scribes at Car and Driver go through every new vehicle on sale and pick the ten best cars available here in the United States. And while some major automotive awards are only shelled out to vehicles that are all-new or significantly updated for a certain model year, C/D‘s approach is to look at the full scope of cars currently on sale. After all, there are some cars that are simply perennial favorites, even if they haven’t changed year over year.

For 2012, the Chevrolet Volt and Hyundai Sonata have fallen off the list to make room for the Audi A6/A7 and Ford Focus. The other eight vehicles that round out the 10Best list have carried over from the 2011 winners, but we can’t say we’re surprised. These ten cars indeed represent some of the best vehicles on sale today.

The 2012 Car and Driver 10Best winners are:

Mazda previews hot MX-5 Miata Spyder and Turbo2 concepts for SEMA

Published by Mazda Blogs on October 29th, 2011

Truth be told, we find most SEMA concepts to simply be gaudy aftermarket overkill. These two Mazda models, however – now these are something we’d like to sink our teeth into.

Let’s start with the MX-5 Miata Spyder concept. The most obvious alteration here is the removal of the stock MX-5’s folding soft top (or hard top) for the sake of a stretched canvas roof, similar to the rakish and flying buttressed Porsche Boxster Spyder. That, combined with larger wheels, a lowered stance, aero kit and a revised front fascia make this a Miata we’d definitely want to spend a lot of quality time with. We’re already madly in love with the standard car, so making it lighter and improving the dynamics promises to be nothing short of motoring bliss.

Mazda Turbo2 conceptThe second concept is something we’ve been begging Mazda to create for quite some time, too. The Turbo2 is, according to Mazda, “one of our most powerful turbocharged engines in our lightest platform.” That’s a recipe for success if we’ve ever heard one. We can do without the ground effects kit and graphics package, but the thought of a turbocharged engine under the hood of a better-tuned Mazda2 (read: Mazdaspeed2) is a project we’re more than willing to get behind.

We’ll see both concepts live from Las Vegas next week. For now, feast your eyes on the hotness in our high-res image gallery.
