Mazda is slightly increasing pricing for the 2016 Mazda6 and CX-5, but buyers are getting a little more from the refreshed models like exterior updates and higher-quality cabins.
A tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is, as you might have guessed, designed to monitor the air pressure in the tires, and alert the driver if pressure drops. But a problem found in the Mazda6 could keep the system from doing its job.
According to the recall notice issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the TPMS in the Mazda6 might not recognize a loss in tire pressure if all the tires slowly deflate at the same time. Under-inflated tires, it goes without saying, could increase the risk of a crash.
As a result, Mazda is recalling 99,711 examples of the 2014-2015 Mazda6 to have the system’s software updated.

The grille’s horizontal slats are now trimmed in chrome, while the brand’s chrome wing motif on the fascia is larger and more prominent, particularly where it feeds into the headlights.
Mazda has made more significant changes in the cabin, replacing the built-in nav unit of the old 6 with a freestanding seven-inch screen that has a transformative effect on the look of the dash. The HVAC controls are also tweaked, while the head-up display unit has been cribbed from the Mazda3.
Aside from the new looks, this is the same old 6 that we enjoyed during our long-term loan. The 2.5-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder and six-speed transmissions are all carry-over items, although Mazda has somehow managed to NVH by a quarter at freeway speeds. Rather worryingly, though, the press release makes no mention of Mazda’s long-awaited diesel engine.

Despite the PRHT’s availability, some are still yearning for a proper fixed-head coupe.
We are just days away from the official unveiling of the next-generation 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata on September 3, and it’s fair to say that the mouths of enthusiasts are watering in anticipation for the latest version of this iconic roadster. Hard facts about the new droptop aren’t easy to find, and in the absence of further disclosure from Mazda officials, the rumormill is in full swing, including word that a long-awaited hardtop coupe model will figure into the new generation’s plans.
According to Automotive News, Mazda has a staggering number of updates planned for essentially its entire range in the coming years. The company’s strategy often amounts to a one-two punch with some updates coming one year and more following the next. It’s an interesting tactic that should keep the brand in the headlines with all of the changes.
In terms of the Miata, that tactic means going on sale sometime next summer as an all-new ragtop model that returns to its roots with a similar size and weight as the original (Autoblog sources indicate that there will be a substantial weight drop versus today’s NC Miata, but we don’t expect a return to NA or even necessarily NB featheriness). A 2.0-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder and six-speed manual should provide a decent jump in performance, too.
The vaguer news arises about a year later,when the publication’s sources say Mazda will bring out a MX-5 coupe with a fastback design. This isn’t to be confused with a power folding retractable hardtop option (PRHT) – the runaway success of the folding lid on the current generation means we expect a similar unit to be available when the new generation first goes on sale. Despite the PRHT’s availability, some buyers are still yearning for a proper fixed-head coupe bodystyle, and apparently Mazda may be listening. With the death of the RX-8, Mazda doesn’t have a hard top sports car in its lineup, and this would seem to be an easy way to get one.

Faulty Takata airbag inflators keep taking their toll on automakers. Mazda is the latest to be affected in the US by announcing a recall covering 18,050 Mazda6 and RX-8 models to replace the front, passenger-side airbags. Specifically, the campaign covers 18,000 Mazda6 units from the 2003 and 2004 model years built between May 29, 2002, and March 4, 2004, and 50 RX-8 vehicles from the 2004 model year made between June 25, 2003, and June 30, 2003.
As with the rest of the vehicles with these faulty inflators, it’s possible for the part to rupture when deploying the airbag and potentially spray shrapnel at the occupant. Mazda’s defect notice goes into a bit more detail than most about the problem saying: “some propellant wafers have been produced with an inadequate compaction force, or may have been exposed to uncontrolled moisture conditions (those wafers could have absorbed moisture beyond the allowable limits).”
This isn’t Mazda’s first difficulty with Takata-supplied airbags this year. The company was among the seven automakers that recalled vehicles in hot-weather states over the inflators. It also had to recently fix 42,000 Mazda6 vehicles in China over the issue.
Repairs of the Mazda6 and RX-8 are scheduled to start in August, and obviously there’s no charge to owners. Scroll down to read the recall announcement, or read the complete defect notice as a PDF, here.

The scope of the problem with the faulty airbag inflators from Takata continues to broaden and is now reaching China, as well. Mazda is recalling 42,732 Mazda6 units there, produced by its local joint venture partner China FAW Car Company, to replace the front passenger airbags. It comes as part of Mazda’s recall of nearly 160,000 vehicles worldwide, including about 34,600 in the US, according to Reuters.
This is the same problem that caused seven automakers in the US to recall an estimated 2.1 million vehicles in late June. The airbag inflators can potentially explode instead of deploying the airbag, which hampers the bag’s inflation. In some cases occupants are also hit by the metal shrapnel, which can cause further injuries. In the US, Mazda is repairing the 2003-2007 Mazda6 (pictured above), 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed6, 2004 MPV and 2004-2008 RX-8 originally sold in or currently registered in Florida, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii.
This is hardly the first instance of this issue. Since 2001, there have been 20 recalls tied to the exploding airbags supplied by Takata. The problem is possibly linked to the propellant in the inflators, but there’s no conclusive evidence of that yet. Most of the automakers in the US limited the most recent recalls only to a few humid states because moisture potentially exacerbated the problem.

The Chinese auto market is one of the most interesting in the world to look at. Its automakers appear to still be figuring things out and remain open to experimentation. For example, at this moment, you can buy new copies of all three generations of the Mazda6 from showrooms there.
Mazda joint-venture partner FAW recently introduced the latest generation to China as the Mazda6 Atenza, according to Just Auto. Yet buyers still have the option of getting the previous generation as well, which is sold as the Mazda6 Ruiyi. Obviously, that isn’t too remarkable – companies in the US have briefly sold two generations of the same nameplate simultaneously for brief points in the past, and the practice is much more common in developing markets. However, Chinese consumers still have the third choice, too – the first-generation model that dates back to the early 2000s, is still on offer, known simply as Mazda6.
While it would be hard to imagine selling three generations of the same models at once in the US, the idea is an interesting one. We enjoyed our long-term test of the latest generation, and the previous models weren’t bad cars either, so provided there’s a healthy difference in pricing and marketplace confusion is limited by differing names, we can see it working. If nothing else, it’s a fascinating illustration of how broad China’s developing auto market really is.

The Winter Without End is seemingly dead. Outside my office windows, my brown and yellow lawn is fully exposed to the increasingly powerful sunshine, the morning birdsong is louder than anything until the garbage trucks start rolling, and I’m seriously considering having the summer tires put back on my personal fleet. That last one is a little scary, as I’m a firm believer in the April Snow Jinx, but you get the idea.
The long-term Mazda6 has also long since left my driveway. Looking back on my notes from the time it was in my charge, however, I see all remarks are dominated by one highlighted section at the top: “worst winter drive of all time.” I hardly need the reminder, to be honest. Here’s what happened.
When the Mazda showed up at my door, we’d already fitted the thing with its new winter rubber: Bridgestone Blizzaks. Plunking down for dedicated snow tires was a near necessity this year – as it almost always is in Michigan. We didn’t see much reprieve from snow-choked, iced over roads here in Ann Arbor, and the knobbier rubber proved invaluable in getting me out of my house time and again.
It seems that Yellow Sac spiders really, really love Mazda. Three years after Mazda recalled 52,000 Mazda6 sedans over spider webs obstructing the evaporative canister vent lines of 2009 and 2010 Mazda6 models, another recall has been issued for 42,000 more of the models built between 2010 and 2012 and equipped with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine.
According to the automaker, there have been nine confirmed sightings of spiders in vent lines since the original recall. It seems that covers were applied at the factory to keep the arachnids from entering, but it hasn’t quite exterminated the problem. A reflash of the ECU is required that “[changes] the logic behind how the car purges the charcoal canister during normal operation,” says Jeremy Barnes, Director, Public Relations & Brand Experience at Mazda North American Operations.
So far, Mazda has not recorded any fires, accidents or injuries due to this tangled mess of webs. Recall notices will be mailed out to owners later this month. Despite the fact that the annual SEMA show is more of an exercise in what “could be” than what “will be,” it gives automakers the chance to stretch the legs of some of its most important models. Take the 2014 Mazda6, for example – it’s hardly new, having gone on sale early this year – but this year’s SEMA expo marks the first time Mazda has been able to show off the customization possibilities for its sleek midsize sedan. To that end, the Japanese automaker has arrived in Las Vegas with two very different takes on its sexy Six.
First up is the Mazda6 Club Sport you see above, wearing a “motorsports-inspired” gray, black and red accent-color scheme that, as Mazda says, is “represented in not-so-subtle angular lines reminiscent of a car speeding past your line of sight.” The whole car is done up in a base color of Composite Grey, and uses a Brilliant Black roof to match the similarly colored front, side and rear diffusers, as well as the rear spoiler. Mazda has fitted the Club Sport with Rays 57 Motorsport G07FXX 20-inch wheels, wrapped in Yokohama 245/35R20 tires. Powering the CS is Mazda’s 2.2-liter Skyactiv-D diesel four-cylinder engine (that we’ll get in the standard Six early next year), and other changes include an H&R spring kit, larger Brembo brakes and a Racing Beat exhaust.
And then there’s the Ceramic 6 Concept, pictured right. The name comes from the car’s Ceramic White paint, though we don’t really get the Taupe Silver accent stripes. Mazda says they’re meant to mimic “the linear frequency patterns found on the likes of couture dresses and flowing fabrics,” but it just looks a bit overwrought to us. The Mazda6 already has so many clean lines, why add more?
Mazda has fitted the Ceramic 6 with Rays Volk Racing Original G25 20-inch wheels, also finished in that same silver color. Additional upgrades include an H&R spring kit, larger Brembo brakes and a Racing Beat exhaust (sound familiar?). Inside, there are new, premium soft leathers throughout, in a white-and-black theme, with metallic accents.
