Mazda CX-3 Teaser Sketch for the LA Auto Show

The Mazda booth at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show will showcase some new crossovers. In addition to the refreshed CX-5 that we’re expecting, the Japanese automaker has announced plans to unveil its new CX-3 compact crossover.

According to Mazda, the brand’s entry into the compact CUV market will feature “the full range of SKYACTIV technology and KODO – Soul of Motion design.” We take that to mean lightweight chassis and body architectures along with fuel-sipping gasoline and, perhaps, diesel engines.

The CX-3 will have to take on a slew of upcoming competitors, including the Honda HR-V, Chevrolet Trax and Jeep Renegade, and reports indicate it will share a platform with the Mazda2, which is just starting production in Mexico. We don’t yet know if it will be front-wheel drive only or if all-wheel drive will be optional. The CUV is also likely to share the Mazda2’s engine, which isn’t yet revealed for the North American market. Japan gets the 2 with either a 1.3-liter gasoline engine or a 1.5-liter diesel.

Mazda reports highest profits in its 94-year history

We may only be a third of the way through 2014, but for Japanese companies, March 31 marked the end of fiscal 2014, and it was a banner financial year for Mazda’s global operations. The Japanese independent saw its highest global operating profits in its nearly 100-year history. Its global operating profits were up a huge 238 percent. Yes, a 238 percent increase over 2012 to 1.36 billion euros ($1.88 billion), eclipsing the brand’s previous best year, 2008, by 12 percent. Net earnings, revenue and global sales volume also saw increases over the last fiscal year.

What’s most impressive, though, is where Mazda saw improvement. The notoriously rough European market was rather kind to the Zoom-Zoom brand, where sales increased 25 percent to 163,000 units. That figure was bolstered by a 35-percent sales increase in Great Britain and a 20-percent jump in Germany, Europe’s two largest markets. Japanese sales, meanwhile, were up a respectable 13 percent, to 244,000 units. In China, Mazda saw a 12 percent bump.

Notice we aren’t talking about North American sales? That’s because Mazda only saw a moderate, five-percent gain in the New World, with sales climbing to 391,000 units in the US, Canada and Mexico. This is particularly disappointing considering Mazda has launched three critically acclaimed products (CX-5, Mazda6 and most recently, Mazda3) for the North American market over the past two fiscal years. Still, it isn’t a particular reason to be concerned, as IHS industry analyst Stephanie Brinley notes. “Five percent isn’t terrible,” Brinley told Autoblog, saying that Mazda should see a bump in 2014 as the Mazda3 picks up steam.

While Mazda may have hoped its five-percent gain in North America was a bit higher, it shows solid progress on company CEO Masamichi Kogai and his promise to raise US sales to 400,000 units.

Mazda struggles to meet demand on rising sales

Demand for Mazdas is high, but supply is tight, resulting in a slower sales increase compared to last year.

For Mazda there’s good and not-so-good news on the heels of strong US sales in 2012: demand is high – especially for the Mazda3, Mazda6 and CX-5 – but supply is low, reports. That’s partly because all Mazda production happens in Japan, since it ended its alliance with Ford and pulled out of a joint venture with the Blue Oval building cars in suburban Detroit last year.

In 2012, Mazda sales here jumped 26.4 percent, but 2013 sales through August have just been keeping pace with the overall US auto industry, increasing at a rate of 6.8 percent. Mazda North American Operations director of marketing and communications Jeremy Barnes says that sales have slowed because the company is facing challenges delivering products here.

That should be offset somewhat as Mazda rolls out its all-new (and quite good) 2014 Mazda3 sedan in the fourth quarter. Currently Mazda3 sales represent 40 percent of the automaker’s total sales in the US, reports. Sales should also experience a boost when Mazda opens up a new plant in Mexico in spring 2014.

In the meantime, the CX-5 has done very well lately, which experienced a sales increase of 82.3 percent in August – the crossover’s best month ever. The Mazda6 also had a good August, with a 167-percent increase compared to the same time last year, despite a tight supply.
