Mazda MX-5 Miata 25th Anniversary Edition

Looking to buy one of the limited-edition 25th Anniversary Mazda MX-5 Miata roadsters? Well, you’re too late. According to Mazda, all 100 examples of the darling two-seater have sold out – and it only took 10 minutes.

On Tuesday, Mazda opened its pre-order site for the limited-run Miata, and had intended to keep the site running until May 31, or until 250 customers were registered, whichever came first. Just 10 minutes later, 250 people had signed up. Now, Mazda will contact those folks, and the first 100 that are verified will be given the opportunity to pre-order the unique MX-5. “Upon verification of purchase intent and transmission selection, the customer’s information will then be forwarded to the dealership of their choosing to finalize the transaction,” Mazda said in a press release.

The 2015 MX-5 Miata 25th Anniversary Edition models will arrive at dealers this summer, retailing for $32,205 with the six-speed manual, or $32,655 for those desiring the automatic transmission. Based on the PRHT (Power Retractable Hard Top) model, the limited-edition Miata adds Bilstein shocks, a Soul Red metallic paint job (the same found on the gorgeous Mazda6) with a contrasting black roof, gunmetal wheels and an off-white leather interior. Special badging will be found inside the car, and buyers will also be treated to a custom-crafted Tourneau watch and a display winder box.

Not lucky enough to get your hands on one of the 25th Anniversary roadsters? If our vast experience with the Miata is any indication, we trust that you’ll enjoy the regular model just as much. Scroll down for Mazda’s official announcement.

2015 Mazda MX-5 Miata 25th Anniversary Edition

Ford may be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Mustang this week, but it’s not the only automaker with a sports car icon to fete at this year’s New York Auto Show. Mazda is also celebrating the 25th anniversary of the MX-5 Miata with an array of 15 classic models. It’s also showing off the chassis for the next MX-5, and unveiling a special 25th Anniversary Edition.

Next-gen Mazda MX-5 Skyactiv chassisThe special edition is based on the retractable hardtop model with either manual or automatic transmission, Bilstein shocks, a metallic red paint job with contrasting black roof and an off-white leather interior. Naturally, special badging can be found inside and out to set it apart from the record 940,000 other MX-5s sold to date, and just 100 examples will find their way to US buyers.

Along with the two-tone special, Mazda is also showing off the new Skyactiv chassis and engine that’ll underpin and power the upcoming next-generation MX-5 (as well as an as-yet-to-be-determined Fiat Group roadster if the two parties can work out their differences). With a lower center of gravity that’s also closer to the middle of the car, the new chassis promises even better balance and a good couple hundred pounds of weight savings over the outgoing model. Check it all out in the press releases below.

NFL player Alfred Morris receives his thoroughly restored 1991 Mazda 626

Alfred Morris' 1991 Mazda 626

Washington Redskins starting running back Alfred Morris might not drive a flashy sports car or SUV, but after today, he’ll be driving the nicest 1991 Mazda 626 on the planet.

Back in July, Morris temporarily traded in his 626 – cheekily named Bentley – for a 2014 Mazda6 loaner courtesy of Mazda, and today the sedan was presented back to him after the ultimate PR stunt: a reported 275-man-hour restoration that left this 22-year-old daily driver looking like it just rolled off the assembly line.

Not everything was brought back to original condition, though. The expired sticker from Morris’ final year at Florida Atlantic University was left on the windshield, but to fit the car’s nickname, a few high-end touches were added to the interior. This includes the quilted, cross-stitched leather seats (just like a real Bentley) and the touchscreen Pioneer audio system. There’s also a plaque under the hood marking this car as the “Alfred Morris Project.”

According to Jalopnik, Morris bought the car back in his college days from his pastor for just $2. We’re not sure how much money Mazda and Mazda’s D.C.-area dealerships put into this restoration, but it was definitely no cheap undertaking. Scroll through the gallery to see before, during and after shots of Morris’ very special 626.
