China’s FAW now building all three Mazda6 generations

2014 Mazda6

The Chinese auto market is one of the most interesting in the world to look at. Its automakers appear to still be figuring things out and remain open to experimentation. For example, at this moment, you can buy new copies of all three generations of the Mazda6 from showrooms there.

Mazda joint-venture partner FAW recently introduced the latest generation to China as the Mazda6 Atenza, according to Just Auto. Yet buyers still have the option of getting the previous generation as well, which is sold as the Mazda6 Ruiyi. Obviously, that isn’t too remarkable – companies in the US have briefly sold two generations of the same nameplate simultaneously for brief points in the past, and the practice is much more common in developing markets. However, Chinese consumers still have the third choice, too – the first-generation model that dates back to the early 2000s, is still on offer, known simply as Mazda6.

While it would be hard to imagine selling three generations of the same models at once in the US, the idea is an interesting one. We enjoyed our long-term test of the latest generation, and the previous models weren’t bad cars either, so provided there’s a healthy difference in pricing and marketplace confusion is limited by differing names, we can see it working. If nothing else, it’s a fascinating illustration of how broad China’s developing auto market really is.

Classic metal may make new Forza 5 pack our favorite ever [w/video]

Forza Motorsport 5: 1940 Ford De Luxe Coupe

We’re usually pretty enthused every time Turn 10 Studios unveils another of its monthly car packs for Forza Motorsport 5. It means we’ll have an entirely new batch of vehicles to play with when the work day finally ends, whether that means we race, tune, style or simply crash them. This latest car pack, though, the Meguiar’s Car Pack, is arguably one of the most interesting that we’ve seen.

On the surface, there are some pretty standard cars here. The BMW M3 DTM car is going to be an extremely cool addition to the game, as is the Aston Martin V12 Zagato. Where this car pack gets interesting, though, are in the number of classics on offer. Sure, a 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air might not be too special in a game like Forza. We could say the same of a 1967 Chevelle. What about an Aston Martin DBR1, though? Or the bootlegger’s dream – the 1940 Ford De Luxe Coupe? Yes, there are some seriously weird gems in this car pack.

Both the 1973 Mazda RX-3 and the underappreciated, Lotus-tuned Ford Cortina are featured here, while we can add one more Alfa Romeo to Forza’s stable with the gorgeous 1986 GTV-6 (this writer is still holding out hope for the appearance of a Montreal or SZ in a future car pack). Rounding out the group is the Dodge Dart Hemi Super Stock.

Turn 10 put together a short video composed of in-game footage of the cars. Scroll down and have a peak at the video, as well as the press release, which describes each car. The Meguiar’s Car Pack for Forza Motorsport 5 is currently available for download, and costs $9.99 (naturally, it’s free for Season Pass owners).

2014 Mazda6 recalled due to fuel overfill fire risk

Mazda6

Mazda is recalling 19,000 Mazda6 sedans from model year 2014, over concerns that the fuel tanks can be filled up too much. What is it with Mazda and fuel tanks?

The big concern is, obviously, spillage when filling up. There’s also a risk that a radical temperature swing could cause the fuel volume to expand, causing a full tank to spill over without the driver knowing about it. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration bulletin, if the fuel spills over, it could end up in something called the charcoal canister, which helps with the car’s emissions. If it fills up the canister, it could leak out onto the road. None of this is really desirable.

The affected vehicles were all built between October 25, 2012 and May 9, 2013. It’s unclear if there have been any fires due to this problem. Dealers should have been notified by now, while owners should begin receiving official recall notifications very soon.

To remedy the issue, dealers will install an adapter in the fuel tank’s shutoff valve and, if necessary, replace the charcoal canister. Naturally, the repairs will be handled free of charge.

Take a look below for the notification from NHTSA.

Next Mazda CX-9 to launch by 2016, could get turbo-four

2013 Mazda CX-9

Mazda has a lot going on these days, what with launching the new Mazda6 and Mazda3, with the new Mazda2 just around the corner. We know the new Miata is also on the way, and after that it looks like the next vehicle in its lineup due for an overhaul is the CX-9 crossover, due to launch by 2016. The move makes sense because the CUV is growing long in the tooth. It was first introduced in 2007 and was refreshed twice since then.

The next-generation CX-9 will move away from Ford-derived components like the V6 in the current model and will likely use a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. However, a final decision hasn’t been made yet. “If I ask Mr. Hitomi, our top guy of powertrains at Mazda, he believes the downsizing turbo solution costs more. But real downsizing means six-cylinder to four-cylinder turbo could make sense from a cost point of view,” said Mazda’s global marketing boss Masahiro Moro to CarAdvice at the New York Auto Show. The executive said a hybrid powertrain option would be unlikely, but markets outside the US could get a diesel, as well.

Moro also tipped his hand at future Mazda model plans. He hints that the Japanese automaker is considering building a luxury vehicle with a six-cylinder engine. “It’s too early, we don’t have a car yet. But we are collecting advice as to V6 or straight-six,” he said to CarAdvice. We’ll definitely be watching.

Mazda Miata 25th anniversary display is roadster heaven on Earth

Mazda Miata 25th Anniversary Display

As part of the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the MX-5 Miata, Mazda has put together a rather large display at its New York Auto Show booth, showing off significant models from the diminutive roadsters history.

The display represents a healthy split of volume models, with cars 14, 15 and 17 sitting alongside cars 500,000 and 700,000. There are also more than a few concept cars in the offering, such as the Super20 Concept we drove a few years back, as well as older offerings, like the Club Racer concept from the 1989 Chicago Auto Show, the M-Speedster from the 1995 Chicago show and the M Coupe from the 1996 New York Auto Show.

We’ve put together a gallery of images of the historical Miata display, which you can view above. Take a look and then let us know which of Mazda’s awesome roadsters is your favorite.

2014 Mazda6: Winter’s End Update

2014 Mazda6 Long-term

The Winter Without End is seemingly dead. Outside my office windows, my brown and yellow lawn is fully exposed to the increasingly powerful sunshine, the morning birdsong is louder than anything until the garbage trucks start rolling, and I’m seriously considering having the summer tires put back on my personal fleet. That last one is a little scary, as I’m a firm believer in the April Snow Jinx, but you get the idea.

The long-term Mazda6 has also long since left my driveway. Looking back on my notes from the time it was in my charge, however, I see all remarks are dominated by one highlighted section at the top: “worst winter drive of all time.” I hardly need the reminder, to be honest. Here’s what happened.

When the Mazda showed up at my door, we’d already fitted the thing with its new winter rubber: Bridgestone Blizzaks. Plunking down for dedicated snow tires was a near necessity this year – as it almost always is in Michigan. We didn’t see much reprieve from snow-choked, iced over roads here in Ann Arbor, and the knobbier rubber proved invaluable in getting me out of my house time and again.

Ward’s releases 10 Best Interiors list for 2014

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

While we’re still a ways off from the automotive awards season proper, where things like North American Car and Truck of the Year, Motor Trend‘s Car of the Year and Car and Driver‘s Ten Best are named, that doesn’t mean there aren’t trophies being handed out to deserving automakers. Ward’s 10 Best Interiors being one of them.

As the name might imply, the magazine focuses on the very best interior treatments in the US market. Whereas some awards purposely exclude extreme, high-dollar offerings, Ward’s considers them – the only requirement is that a vehicle has a “new or significantly redesigned interior.”

Ward’s offered up the list of winners in simple, alphabetical order, and it only seems fair to do the same:

We’ll admit to being surprised by a pair of these – the Kia Soul and Jeep Cherokee – while the rest make a fair amount of sense. What’s most remarkable is the huge range of prices, from the $24,010 Kia to the $372,800 Rolls-Royce.

What do you think of Ward’s findings? Do you agree? Are there any vehicles that should be included in this list? Post your thoughts down in Comments.

Will Mazda show the next Miata’s chassis in NY?

Mazda MX-5 Miata Spy Shot

Mazda is being very sneaky about what it is bringing to the New York Auto Show, and it might have something to do with the next-generation MX-5 Miata. Australian website Motoring.com.au spoke to a company insider who told the Aussie publication that at least the chassis for the roadster will debut in Manhattan. As the rumor goes, the show will act as a kickoff for the PR campaign for the new model.

We contacted Mazda USA PR Director Jeremy Barnes to find out more, and he would neither confirm nor deny the rumor. “Just because you read it on the Internet doesn’t mean you should repeat it,” he said to Autoblog. That’s not exactly an outright denial.

Supporting evidence that the new droptop might be appearing in the Big Apple includes Mazda’s plan to celebrate the model’s 25th anniversary at the show. It’s bringing 15 cars from the first three generations to display. “It will be absolutely worth attending the New York Auto Show if you’re a Miata fan,” Barnes said. That at least hints that there might be something he’s not telling us. Otherwise, it’s a lot of sizzle without any new steak.

The new MX-5′s platform has been developed as a joint venture between Alfa Romeo and Mazda. However, there is now a question whether Alfa is going to actually use the platform, because Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne reportedly refuses to build the cars outside of Italy. Thankfully, the wait won’t be very long to find out whether some portion of the new Miata is being unveiled, because the New York Auto Show opens on April 16.

Remember when C-segment cars were supposed to be hot stuff? Yeah, about that…

Honda Civic

What do the Dodge Dart, Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Mazda3, Subaru Impreza, Toyota Corolla and Volkswagen Jetta all have in common? Well, actually, lots. They are all four-door sedans that fall into the so-called C-segment, and they are all trending downward in sales. This data comes courtesy of Wards Auto, and, while not all such vehicles are down – the Hyunai Elantra has been trending upward – the deficit reportedly rings in at six-percent overall for the segment.

Where are all those compact sedan buyers going? To compact SUVs, at least in part. Wards cites data showing that sales of small SUVs and crossovers are up big over the last several months. Vehicles like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5 are all showing sales increases as buyers shift from sedans to utility vehicles, says Wards.

Still, it’s way too early for automakers to give up on C-segment sedans. Though down, sales of popular models like the Civic and Corolla are good enough to put them well into the top 10 sales chart (in ninth and sixth place, respectively).
