2001 Honda Accord

The recall of faulty airbag inflators supplied by Takata has exploded today to grow to seven automakers. In most cases, only models in certain high-humidity regions were affected because the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found in its investigation that moisture played a roll in determining whether there would be a problem. However, some companies opted for national campaigns. The exact number of affected models for these campaigns isn’t yet known at this time.

BMW is recalling an undisclosed number of 325i, 325Xi, 330i and 330Xi models from the 2001 through 2005 model years and the 2001-2006 model year versions of the 325Ci and 330Ci for the driver side and passenger side inflators. Only vehicles currently registered in Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the US Virgin Islands are covered under this recall.

Neither Chrysler’s filing with NHTSA nor its press release list the specific models affected, but a company spokesperson told Autoblog that at this time it only covers the driver and passenger side inflators for the 2006 Dodge Charger in Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the US Virgin Islands

In most cases, only models in certain high-humidity regions were affected because the NHTSA found that moisture played a roll in determining if there would be a problem.

Ford is recalling an estimated 58,669 cars that include the 2005-2006 model years of the Ford GT for the driver and passenger inflators, the 2007-2007 model years of the Mustang for the driver side and 2004 Ranger for the passenger side. It covers vehicles originally sold or currently registered in, wait for it… Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the US Virgin Islands.

Honda is issuing three separate recalls regarding the problem. First, the company is recalling the 2002-2003 model years Civic, CR-V and Odyssey and the 2003 model year of the Accord, Element, Pilot and Acura MDX to replace the passenger’s side inflator. This covers all models nationwide.

Second, Honda is repairing the passenger’s side airbag inflator in the 2003-2005 Accord, Civic, CR-V, Element, Pilot, the 2003-2004 model year versions of the Odyssey, the 2003-2005 model year Acura MDX and 2005 Acura RL. However, only for vehicles located in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Owners will be notified in July.

Finally, Honda is separately replacing some models’ driver’s side inflators. They include the: 2001-2007 Accord with four-cylinder engines, the 2001-2002 Accord with a V6 engine, 2001-2005 Civic,
2002-2006 CR-V, 2003-2011 Element, 2002-2004 Odyssey, 2003-2007 Pilot, 2006 Ridgeline, 2003-2006 Acura MDX, 2002-2003 Acura TL and 2002-2003 Acura CL. Again, this recall only covers vehicles registered in the states mentioned above.

“Honda has chosen to expand the affected area for these market actions because of similar environmental conditions.”

According to its statement to Autoblog, “Honda has chosen to expand the affected area for these market actions because of similar environmental conditions in those areas.” Balmy, in other words.

Mazda is recalling roughly 34,600 vehicles for their driver and passenger side inflators. The models include the: 2003-2007 Mazda6, 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed6, 2004 MPV and 2004-2008 RX-8. Vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in Florida, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii are covered under the recall.

At this time, Nissan’s recall plans are not yet clear. In the statement from the company to Autoblog, it said that some 2001-2003 model year Nissan and Infiniti vehicles would be added to the recall. There is a separate field action for Puerto Rico, Florida, Hawaii, and the Virgin Islands for models made between January 1 and July 31,2004. A company spokesperson told Autoblog to expect more exact data later in the week.

Finally, Toyota is issuing an additional recall to replace the passenger side inflator on several models located in or originally purchased in Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the Virgin Islands. It covers the 2003-2005 model year versions of the Lexus SC430, Pontiac Vibe, Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Sequoia and Tundra. This comes in addition to the recall from a few weeks ago where the company announced repairs for about 844,277 cars from the 2002-2004 model years for the same problem with the passenger side inflator.

Scroll down to read each company’s NHTSA filing, and it’s official statement, if it has one. And congratulations if you live in the US Virgin Islands, this is the most non-Tim Duncan related news you’ve seen in quite some time.

2014 Mazda6 recalled due to fuel overfill fire risk

Mazda6

Mazda is recalling 19,000 Mazda6 sedans from model year 2014, over concerns that the fuel tanks can be filled up too much. What is it with Mazda and fuel tanks?

The big concern is, obviously, spillage when filling up. There’s also a risk that a radical temperature swing could cause the fuel volume to expand, causing a full tank to spill over without the driver knowing about it. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration bulletin, if the fuel spills over, it could end up in something called the charcoal canister, which helps with the car’s emissions. If it fills up the canister, it could leak out onto the road. None of this is really desirable.

The affected vehicles were all built between October 25, 2012 and May 9, 2013. It’s unclear if there have been any fires due to this problem. Dealers should have been notified by now, while owners should begin receiving official recall notifications very soon.

To remedy the issue, dealers will install an adapter in the fuel tank’s shutoff valve and, if necessary, replace the charcoal canister. Naturally, the repairs will be handled free of charge.

Take a look below for the notification from NHTSA.

Mazda MX-5 Super25 Concept lights the way to motorsports glory

Mazda MX-5 Super25

Following up on last year’s MX-5 Super20 Concept, Mazda has pulled the covers off a somewhat different, though still motorsports-oriented, two-seat roadster concept.

Mazda says the Super25 was created with endurance racing in mind, with a set of PIAA 40 Series halogen lamps front and center to light the way ahead, and a Sparco racing seat, harness and steering wheel keep the driver well in control. An AiM MXL data acquisition logger is set into the dash to help keep track of essential track and car data.

Painted up in Mazdaspeed racing colors – black, gray and red – with Brilliant White highlights, the Super25 carries the number 55 proudly on its sides. This number is significant, as those are the digits that Mazda’s historic Le Mans racer wore in 1991.

Check out all the details in the press release below and the live photos above.

2014 Mazda3 to shed hundreds of pounds; diesel, Mazdaspeed variants possible

2012 Mazda3 sedan, front 3/4 view

According to Car and Driver, the next-generation Mazda3 is set to undergo an extensive overhaul, similar to what the Japanese automaker has done with its larger Mazda6 sedan.

On the powertrain front, expect the still-new 155-horsepower 2.0-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder to carry over. But since the next Mazda3 will likely shed hundreds of pounds thanks to the company’s lighter Skyactiv-tuned platform (a good chunk of which will be shared with the CX-5), the 2.0-liter engine should return improved fuel economy and performance since there won’t be so much heft to cart around. Currently, the 2.0-liter Mazda3 returns up to 40 miles per gallon on the highway.

C/D also states that a diesel-powered version of the compact Mazda3 is under consideration, as is a new version of the turbocharged Mazdaspeed3.

Visually, expect the new Mazda3 to receive the full brunt of the automaker’s new Kodo styling language. That isn’t a bad thing, though – both the new CX-5 and Mazda6 are handsome vehicles, and we think the aggressive headlamps and upright grille will translate nicely to the smaller package. C/D has worked up a rendering of what the Mazda3 could look like in hatchback form with the new styling direction, so head over there to check it out.

Mazda piggybacks on Ford Escape recall with 215,000 Tribute models of its own

2006 Mazda Tribute - front three-quarter view, with boulders

A day after Ford issued a recall of 485,000 Escape crossovers from its 2001-2004 model years, Mazda has reportedly issued its own for the 215,000 examples of its Tribute, the Escape’s mechanical twin. While it’s the same engine configuration being recalled, the 3.0-liter V6 with cruise control, there is a difference in the recalls: Mazda is recalling 2002-2006 and 2008 model year Tributes, three more years of production than the Escape (the Tribute wasn’t made in 2007).

The problem is a lack of clearance between the engine cover and the cruise control cable, which can prevent the driver from letting off the throttle if the cruise control is on. The situation was caused by a repair for a different recall in 2005. Mazda says the engine cover is similar enough to warrant inclusion for all years of production it has cited. It isn’t known yet if Ford will expand its own recall.

Watch Mazda’s MX-5 GT Concept climb the hill at Goodwood

Jade Pavely in the Mazda MX-5 GT Concept at the Goodwood Festival of Speed

Mazda brought the company’s ever-sexy MX-5 Miata GT Concept to this past weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed for a little sprint up the hill. With 205 horsepower on tap thanks to new cams and a revised throttle body, the concept is exactly what Miata buyers have been clamoring for all these years: more power. Mazda handed the keys over to Jade Pavely, an endurance driver with the company for the run, and the driver had no trouble keeping the convertible right side up and between the hay bales on her way toward the finish line.

We could certainly think of less entertaining ways to get around the course. Mazda didn’t mention how long it takes the machine to get from start to finish, but we doubt the company was out to set any records. Chances are this little exercise had more to do with putting eyeballs on that blaze-orange paint and testing the waters for a possible production version. Check out the brief video below to have a look.

Mazda working on multiple rotary engines, has no plans for SkyActiv V6

Mazda rotary engine closeup

The minds at Car and Driver recently took a moment to speak with Robert Davis, senior vice president of Mazda U.S. operations, about the automaker’s plans for the future. According to Davis, the rotary engine will continue to play a role in the company’s products moving forward, with engineers applying the lessons learned through the SkyActiv program to the powerplant. That means the next-generation rotary will likely feature reduced internal friction and lightweight internals in a quest to reduce emissions and increase fuel economy. But the engine may find applications outside of its traditional role.

Not only is Mazda pursuing a rotary engine to power a vehicle, Davis admits Mazda is also investigating ways to use the design in tandem with an electric motor, with the pistonless engine responsible for charging an extended-range EV’s batteries. Given the compact size and relatively low torque supplied by a rotary, this application would seem to hold promise. Of course, we’ve heard some of this before.

And what of a SkyActiv V6? Davis makes it clear there’s no room in the SkyActiv stable for a six-cylinder, saying that the company will focus on lighter platforms and forced-induction four-cylinder engines instead.

Mazda driver fights crazy claw tow truck

Escaping a claw tow truck

There’s the right way to protest your vehicle being towed, and there’s a wrong way. The individual in the video after the jump is a clear believer in the latter method. We aren’t entirely sure where this took place or what sort of circumstances led to this particular Mazda3 to find itself doing battle with a massive claw-equipped tow truck, but we do know that the four-door is doing its best to avoid incarceration. After somehow managing to get the vehicle back on the road, the driver proceeds to attempt to free the wheels and tires from an array of cumbersome straps. Despite a few valiant attempts, the driver doesn’t seem to be able to break free from the claw’s grasp.

Now, we have to say that this type of tow truck appears to be designed to limit potential damage to its cargo under normal circumstances, which makes it all the more unfortunate that the Mazda owner decided to go Rambo. Odds are the tow truck itself sustained plenty of damage, and while the grainy nighttime video work makes it hard to see exactly what’s going on, we have to imagine that the rear suspension on the Mazda isn’t in any better off. Hit the jump to see the ill-fated automotive acrobatics for yourself.

Mazda CX-9 being investigated for brake fluid leak

Published by admin on August 23rd, 2011

Mazda CX-9

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation (read: not a recall) into the braking effectiveness of 2008 Mazda CX-9 crossovers. The reason? NHTSA received data from Mazda indicating a “high number” of warranty claims and reports related to the vehicle’s braking system.

The NHTSA probe will examine reports that leaking brake fluid could degrade braking effectiveness of approximately 37,000 Mazda CX-9s. NHTSA says no injuries or accidents have been reported in connection with the CX-9′s braking system, but the Agency has released this statement: “When brake fluid leaks into the vacuum booster the driver can experience reduced brake effectiveness which can result in extended stopping distance.”

This preliminary investigation by NHTSA is the first step in a process that could lead to a recall if regulators determine the safety-related issue needs to be addressed by the automaker.
