2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata Kuro edition - white - front three-quarter view

The word “kuro” means “black” in Japanese, and several special edition kuro models have made there way to the UK from Japanese automakers in the past few years: the Nissan Juke Kuro last year and the Mazda RX-8 Kuro in 2007. Mazda has gone back to black with the MX-5 Kuro, but unlike those other cars, this one is oddly available in Crystal White Pearlescent, as well as Velocity Red Mica and Brilliant Black.

It will come in either 124-horsepower, 1.8-liter soft top or 158-hp 2.0-liter Roadster Coupe forms (read: retractable hardtop). Sportiness is the brief, but while the softie gets a five-speed manual, the Roadster Coupe bags a six-speed manual, limited-slip differential and side airbags.

Upgraded spec for both variants throws in a new rear bumper with larger exhaust tips, “race car inspired exterior” graphics, 17-inch gunmetal wheels, along with Brilliant Black side mirrors, roof and trim. Inside, the black treatment is contrasted with stone-colored leather on the heated seats, as well as red stitching and alongside alloy pedals. Climate control will come standard.

Mazda RX-8 Spirit R Special Edition

Mazda has chosen to commemorate the departure of the company’s RX-8 with one last special edition in Japan. The Mazda RX-8 Spirit R is set to arrive at Japanese dealerships next month and will offer 1,000 lucky buyers a host of aesthetic upgrades over the base vehicle. The package starts with an RX-8 RS and adds in exclusive badging, unique head- and taillights with black bezels and red brake calipers outside. Indoors, the cabin wears special Spirit R bucket seats hewn by the people at Recaro as well as piano black transmission tunnel trim.

Models equipped with an automatic transmission will enjoy black leather seats with red contrasting stitching. Mazda says that the RX-8 Spirit R will also feature a sport-tuned suspension and larger brakes, as well as 18-inch gun metallic wheels. A total of three exterior color options will be available, including Aluminum Metallic, Sparkling Black Mica and Crystal White Pearl Mica. Hit the jump for the press release.

Mazda MX-5 Black Tuned Roadster

Even the plucky Mazda MX-5 isn’t safe from the temptation of a black edition. Mazda has just rolled out a Black Tuned Roadster in Japan, complete with a little more style than your run-of-the-mill convertible. The package is largely aesthetic thanks to the addition of a Brilliant Black retractable hard top roof and door mirrors as well as Gun Metallic 17-inch alloy wheels. Inside, both the seats and the steering wheel are covered in black leather with sand-colored contrasting stitching. Mazda is only offering the Black Tuned Roadster in three colors; Spirited Green Metallic, Velocity Red Mica and Crystal White Pearl Mica. But not… ummm… black.

As befitting a retractable hard top model, the Black Tuned Roadster comes as loaded as they get with standard gear like a Bose sound system and heated front buckets. Mazda isn’t saying how many of the models it plans to build, but we do know that base models come with a six-speed manual transmission while a six-speed automatic is also available. Japanese buyers can expect to shell out
