Mazda MX-5 Miata roadsters playing Frisbee - video screencap

Playing a game of Frisbee is rarely about power – it’s more about agility, precision and open-air enjoyment. Much the same can be said of the Mazda MX-5 Miata, whose charm has always originated more from its finesse and tactility rather than brute strength and outright speed, qualities the evergreen roadster has traditionally lacked.

So consider it a fine match that Mazda has taken a couple of its popular convertibles out with a handful of crack Frisbee players and put them on a closed circuit in Surrey, England for a stylish game of catch. It’s a simple recipe for entertainment – check out the video by scrolling below.

Diesel-powered Mazda6 Grand-Am Series racer - artist's rendering

The diesel version of the 2014 Mazda6 won’t be hitting North American showrooms until the middle of next year, but we won’t have to wait that long to see the car in action. Mazda will enter its midsize sedan in the new Grand-Am GX class with a Skyactiv-D clean diesel engine under the hood, and the car will make its racing debut at the Rolex 24 at Daytona on January 26. This will be the first time in the race’s 60-year history that a diesel-powered car has competed in the 24-hour race.

We first heard about the 2.2-liter turbocharged Skyactiv-D race engine back in June, but we now know it will used in the Mazda6 and we have a little bit better of an idea of power output. Developed in conjunction with SpeedSource, the clean diesel racer is said to produce more than 400 horsepower using many of the same components that will be found on the passenger version of the car.

The newly created GX class will race against the Daytona Prototypes and GT class cars, and its goal is to provide a race class for alternative fuels and technologies. In addition to the Mazda6, the Lotus Evora GX will also compete in the this class, which will be composed of 13 models from 12 automakers – including Audi, Hyundai, Ford and Scion.

Scroll down for Mazda’s press release, and be sure to check out the Grand-Am link for more information.

2014 Mazda6 Wagon at the Paris Motor Show

The all-new 2014 Mazda6 Wagon has officially bowed under the lights of the 2012 Paris Motor Show along with its fresh-from-Moscow twin, the Mazda6 sedan. Both machines now boast a full suite of Skyactiv efficiency technologies for the first time, and as such, are lighter than their predecessors.

The wagon debuts with a 173-horsepower 2.2-liter Skyactiv diesel engine in two power configurations, both of which conform to Euro 6 emission standards without the burden urea injection. Mazda isn’t saying exactly what sort of fuel economy we can expect from the wagon, but earlier estimations put the diesel sedan in the 43-miles-per-gallon highway range. Expect similar from the five-door.

Buyers will also be able to purchase the 2014 Mazda6 with a direct-injection gasoline 2.0-liter four-cylinder good for 148 horsepower as well as a 2.5-liter gasoline direct injection engine with 189 horsepower. Like the four-door, the long roof will make use of the Mazda i-ELOOP brake regeneration system. Check out the full press release below.

Mazda has given the world a glimpse of the 2014 Mazda6 Wagon ahead of its debut at this year’s Paris Motor Show. The slinky five-door will bow in Europe and Japan with a Skyactiv-D 2.2-liter diesel engine in both standard and high-output configurations. Buyers who prefer a gasoline engine can opt for either 2.0-liter or 2.5-liter direct-injection four-cylinders. Mazda hasn’t said what we can expect to see in terms of transmission options, but the company has made it clear the 2014 Mazda6 Wagon will make use of a new brake energy regeneration system called i-Eloop.

The new Mazda6 Wagon will show off under the lights of the Paris Motor Show starting on September 27. Public days run from September 29 through October 14. In the interim, you can check out the images above and the brief press release below for more information.
