Mazda2 Sedan

Mazda2 Sedan interiorMazda will let customers put some junk in the trunk of its Mazda2 with the introduction of a new four-door model at the upcoming Thailand International Motor Expo on November 28. While the show is still days away from beginning, the Japanese automaker is already spilling some of the details about the sedan variant of its fetching subcompact.

The four-door and traditional hatchback versions of the Mazda2 will both hit Thailand in early 2015. The two of them are essentially identical other than the added trunk and adjusted rear styling for the sedan. It basically makes the model look like a shrunken down version of the Mazda3 sedan, which isn’t a bad thing at all. The company has big expectations for the little car because they’re already Mazda’s bestselling passenger models in Thailand.

Both models will be sold with the SkyActiv-D 1.5 diesel in Thailand, which gives them lower taxes under the government’s low-emission, compact car incentive plan. According to a previous rumor, a gasoline-fueled mill could join the lineup eventually, too.

There’s also gossip that the Mazda2 sedan could eventually be sold in Australia and Europe, but US sales are still a mystery. When asked about the four-door here, Mazda spokesperson Eric Booth told Autoblog, “We’ll have more to say on Mazda2 at a later date. Right now, our focus is on the launches of the all-new CX-3 and MX-5 as well as the refreshed CX-5 and Mazda6.” The company is showing all of those models at this week’s Los Angeles Auto Show.

Car and Driver 10Best list cracked by Tesla Model S, BMW 3 Series left off

Tesla Model S

Car and Driver 10Best LogoCar and Driver is keeping new blood pumping into its annual 10Best cars list with three new entries making it on for 2015 and a perennial favorite falling off. Among the biggest shocks this year is that the BMW 3 Series and 4 Series are no longer named, despite years of some portion of that lineup earning a mention. In another surprise, the Tesla Model S (specifically in S 60 trim to fit under the $80,000 cost cap) makes it to the 2015 roster and is the only electrically motivated member of the group.

Despite the loss of the 3 Series, BMW isn’t entirely shut out this year, because the M235i gets its name on the list. Car and Driver argues that the little coupe feels like a welcome throwback to the E46 chassis M3 of the early 2000s. In addition to the Model S, the final newbie to the annual group is the 2015 Ford Mustang GT. The inclusion of these new members knocks the Audi A6/A7 family and Ford Fiesta ST out from the 2014 rundown.

The other seven models carry over from last year, including the Cadillac CTS, Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, Honda Accord, Mazda3, Mazda6, Porsche Boxster/Cayman and Volkswagen Golf/GTI.

The 2015 10Best cars list certainly seems to have something for everyone from the hot hatch fan to the family man and even the green car driver, thanks to the addition of the Tesla. Head over to Car and Driver to read its detailed explanations for each vehicle’s inclusion, but if you’ve got a difference of opinion or just really like the list, let us know in Comments.

2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata a knight in white satin

2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata

We’re not going to lie to you. The reason you’re seeing the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata on these pages again is solely because this is the first time we’re seeing the roadster displayed in a color other than the ruby shade it was first shown in. Okay, okay, so this is the first time the Miata is being displayed at a North American auto show other than SEMA, and we’d say that this is the first time Mazda is showing a US-spec model, but clearly this is a right-hand-drive car. Either way, there’s still not much to it yet, especially since Mazda is still withholding power and performance figures.

As expected, the ND Miata, as it is already known among the cognoscenti, will receive a 2.0-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder and the buyer’s choice of a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic here in the US. The 1.5-liter model engine that had been linked to the car back in the rumormill stage will not make it to our showrooms.

Preliminary specifications still show the Miata measuring just 154.1 inches in length overall, with an increased track width to 68.1 inches and a low, low overall height of 49.0 inches. Despite the larger-displacement engine and its presumably heavier weight, Mazda is still claiming ideal 50:50 weight distribution and a weight loss of over 220 pounds versus today’s NC generation. All of which sounds like the Miata has the right ingredients to make good on its promised Jinba Ittai (“rider and horse as one”) driving experience.

It might be just plain ol’ white paint, but you can color us excited.

2016 Mazda6 gets a facelift in LA

Published by Mazda Blogs on November 19th, 2014

2016 Mazda6

The 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show is a busy one for Mazda, as the Japanese brand shows off not only its all-new CX-3, but a facelifted Mazda6 sedan.

The 2016 sedan has been nipped and tucked to better fit in with newer members of the brand’s range, including the aforementioned CX-3, as well as the Mazda3 and MX-5 Miata.

The grille’s horizontal slats are now trimmed in chrome, while the brand’s chrome wing motif on the fascia is larger and more prominent, particularly where it feeds into the headlights.

Mazda has made more significant changes in the cabin, replacing the built-in nav unit of the old 6 with a freestanding seven-inch screen that has a transformative effect on the look of the dash. The HVAC controls are also tweaked, while the head-up display unit has been cribbed from the Mazda3.

Aside from the new looks, this is the same old 6 that we enjoyed during our long-term loan. The 2.5-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder and six-speed transmissions are all carry-over items, although Mazda has somehow managed to NVH by a quarter at freeway speeds. Rather worryingly, though, the press release makes no mention of Mazda’s long-awaited diesel engine.

We have a vast gallery of photos from Mazda, and will be adding live shots from the floor of the LA Convention Center. Be sure to take a look, give the press release a read, and then head into Comments and let us know what you think of Mazda’s updated sedan.

2016 Mazda CX-5 keeps it simple

2016 Mazda CX-5

2016 Mazda CX-5 interiorTake a long, hard look, folks. This is the refreshed 2016 Mazda CX-5, which makes its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show today. And if you’re thinking, “Say, that looks just like the old one,” you really aren’t alone. The visible updates certainly aren’t major – Mazda has instead focused on giving the already-good CX-5 some thoughtful upgrades to make it a more attractive package than ever.

Outside, there are some slight changes to the styling, including new LED light signatures at the front and rear, as well as redesigned foglamp housings. Uplevel models also ride on attractive new 19-inch alloy wheels, with a dark finish.

Under the hood, it’s all the same. Mazda’s Skyactiv 2.0- and 2.5-liter four-cylinder engines carry over, with 155 and 184 horsepower, respectively. Front-wheel-drive, 2.5-liter models get a small bump in fuel economy, too – the CUV is now rated at 26 miles per gallon city and 33 mpg highway, up from 25/32. Models equipped with the automatic transmission now benefit from different drive modes, as well.

Moving inside the cabin, the biggest news is the upgrade to the newer Mazda Connect infotainment system that debuted in the Mazda3. It uses a larger screen, with a cleaner, better-designed interface. This is an update that couldn’t come soon enough. Additional interior improvements include more sound deadening, a new electronic parking brake, as well as some improved material and trim finishes. There’s a host of new active safety features available, too, including radar-based cruise control with auto-brake support, lane-departure warning, and so on.

Read the full list of updates in Mazda’s press release, below, and have a look at the 2016 CX-5 in the gallery above.

Mazda rolls out unlimited mileage warranty in Canada

Published by Mazda Blogs on November 14th, 2014

2015 Mazda6

Cold weather might be starting to grip parts of Canada, but our neighbors to the north are going to be able to drive their 2015 Mazda cars and utilities from Vancouver to Montreal with a little more peace of mind. That’s because Mazda Canada is instituting an unlimited mileage warranty for its new models.

The updated plan starts with all 2015 model year vehicles (even those already sold), and the scheme simply removes that distance limit on everything but the emissions defect coverage. That means that the Mazdas have one year of service adjustments, three years of new vehicle coverage, five years on the powertrain, seven years against corrosion and three years of roadside assistance for as many kilometers as the owner drives.

The change removes at least one, tiny piece of anxiety about buying a new vehicle because it’s easy to know when the coverage ends. “By offering our customers an Unlimited Mileage Warranty, we believe it will enhance their ownership experience by alleviating concerns such as kilometre limitations, repair costs and resale value,” Kory Koreeda, president of Mazda Canada, in the automaker’s announcement.

Autoblog spoke to Mazda spokesperson Nick Beard to ask about any changes to the automaker’s warranty in the US. He told us, “We’re sticking with our current warranty.” Scroll down to read all of the details about the new coverage for Canada.
